Working together to care for residents living with dementia
Residents living in Alexandra Gardens’ Memory Support Household, Azalea Court, have developed beautifully strong bonds with staff, volunteers and other residents.
“We focus on understanding the unique needs and preferences of each resident,” says Manager, Sandra. “A comprehensive team of nurses, personal care workers, lifestyle and pastoral care workers and catering team members all work together to meet the clinical and psychological needs of these residents and – equally importantly – their everyday routines and lifestyle preferences as well.
“We create a space that preserves the residents’ dignity while nurturing their physical, emotional and spiritual needs,” she says.
Personal Care Worker Team Leader, Alisha, says there’s a special kind of connection that forms when you care for someone living with dementia. “It’s about so much more than just meeting their physical needs – it’s being present, bringing comfort and helping them feel safe, respected and valued,” she says.
“In Azalea Court, we like to provide meaningful and engaging activities that spark memories, boost mood, build connections and give residents a sense of purpose. These moments make a real difference in their day.”
Alisha particularly enjoys taking residents on the bus to the local park for a picnic. “Being outside in the fresh air, surrounded by nature, always lifts their spirits. You can see it in their smiles and hear it in their stories,” she says.
Also contributing to resident wellbeing are the dedicated volunteers. One volunteer, Kevin, has been volunteering at Alexandra Gardens for over 18 years and spends most of his week supporting residents in Azalea Court.
“I’m here to provide company and emotional care,” he says. “I like to spend time chatting or reminiscing with the residents as we feed the chickens every morning. There are special moments of interaction, discussion and laughter.”
When the sun is shining, Kevin can be seen joining the residents outside for morning tea under the pergola. And, when Easter or Christmas come around, Kevin is always dressed as the Easter Bunny or Santa, cheerfully handing out gifts and joining in the celebrations.
Azalea Court, the memory support household at Alexandra Gardens is a dedicated household supporting individuals living with dementia. Our team provides the understanding, care and compassion that residents need to feel safe, comfortable and as independent as possible.
