The power of connection – an intergenerational partnership growing big benefits
PresCare Maryborough residents are enjoying a close connection with local Riverside College students and both generations are benefitting from the regular interactions and ongoing partnership.
Earlier this year Riverside Christian College students started a school-based traineeship and Certificate III in Individual Support using our communities as living classrooms. The partnership, formalised last year, is already reaping wonderful additional benefits.
Yaralla Place residents are eagerly awaiting the arrival of some special new garden beds for the community. The residents and students worked together to design the raised garden beds that will allow easy access to tend to plants.
Gardening enthusiast, George, was actively involved in the design process and is very much looking forward to seeing the finished beds. “Working with the students and helping them design something functional together was great fun,” he says.
Maryborough Bunnings kindly donated and delivered all the equipment and the students are now hard at work constructing the beds as part of their curriculum. Once constructed, the beds will be installed on site by the students and prepared for planting.
A group of residents from both communities also recently visited the College Farm where the students showcased their work. There was plenty of time with the animals too. Feeding and interacting with Milo, the pony, and Solo, the guinea pig, was a hit, bringing back many fond memories of their own connections to farms and animals.
We’ll be enjoying the farm visits regularly going forwards.
