Dedicated to making a difference – caring for residents with dementia
Meet Mavis, a Personal Care Worker at Groundwater Lodge, who loves her role and makes it a priority to ensure residents living with memory support needs are receiving the quality care, compassion and friendship they deserve.
“It is deeply rewarding to make a difference in someone’s life,” she says. “I love to see the residents happy, relaxed and engaging in activities.”
At the heart of Groundwater Lodge’s approach is person-centred care, where every individual is seen, heard and valued for who they are. “Every resident is different and I enjoy helping them feel confident and at ease,” she says.
Mavis prides herself building trusted relationships with residents. She gently supports them to remain as independent as possible, and encouraging them to participate in the social and lifestyle activities.
The dedicated team works together to meet the clinical and psychological needs of these residents and – equally importantly – ensure they feel at home at Groundwater Lodge.
“We try to create a safe and familiar environment that resembles and feels like home. Their rooms are decorated with personal items, and we support them to continue with daily tasks like folding laundry and gardening,” she says.
“And, when I’m greeted with a big smile and “hello mate!”, at the start of my shift, I know that I’m making real connections,” she smiles.
The memory support household at Groundwater Lodge is dedicated to supporting individuals with dementia or memory support needs. The dedicated care area and outdoor spaces have been purposefully designed to feel familiar, welcoming and homely. And our special team provides the understanding, care and compassion that residents need to feel independent and safe.
