Above and beyond – Recognising PresCare Alexandra Garden’s dedicated volunteers
At the heart of the Prescare Alexandra Gardens community are some incredible individuals – a group of volunteers who dedicate their time, energy and compassion to enhancing the lives of residents.
Manager, Sandra, says the volunteers are an integral part of the family, bringing their own special joy, support and friendship to residents and staff.
Kevin has volunteered for 17 years. He visits five times a week, playing trivia and quiz games with residents living in our Memory Support Household. “Alexandra Gardens is like an extended family,” he says. “I’ve met so many lovely residents here and I like listening to their life stories.”
Sue, the daughter of former resident, Enid, provides emotional care for residents every week. “We’re reading ‘The Life of Jesus’, which is a modern version of the Bible and we enjoy singing harmonised gospels together,” she says. Sue also facilitates a monthly support group for family members of residents.
We recently farewelled Pastoral Carer, Neil, who has been an important part of our community since he started as a Carer and Assistant in Nursing 47 years ago. He left for a few years, before returning to be our Pastoral Carer for the last three years.
Neil treasured his conversations with the residents and being there for them or their families if they needed someone to talk to. “I loved helping them to achieve purpose and joy in everyday life here,” he said.
While he’s retired from his role, Neil has already signed up to return as a volunteer to drive the bus and take residents on outings.
