We’re moving more, together
Staying active at any age is vital for health and wellbeing and, as residents from PresCare Maryborough are discovering, can be plenty of fun!
Inspired by the Winter Olympics which took place earlier this year, Groundwater Lodge residents recently participated in their own modified games designed by local Physiotherapist, Rowena. With a focus on participation and movement, over 30 residents joined in the fun challenges, with staff and other residents cheering them on.
The games were adapted to suit all mobility levels and included balloon volleyball, basketball shoot-outs, targeted boxing, air hockey and adapted 20m ‘sprints’.
They were so successful that Rowena and Lifestyle Lead, Tracey, are considering additional ideas for fun ways to integrate exercise. Resident, Barbara, loved all the activities and as they wrapped up, immediately asked if they could do it again. “I had so much fun!” she said.
Rowena says she enjoys finding fun ways to support residents in maintaining their mobility, independence and overall wellbeing. “Movement keeps the body strong and the mind bright. It’s wonderful seeing them encourage each other and celebrate their achievements as they become stronger and steadier,” she smiles.
Meanwhile, at Yaralla Place, residents are stepping into better health with regular walks around the garden or out in the community.
The cheerful walkers enjoy the fresh air and sunlight while they catch up on each other’s news. Sometimes, they pause along the way to indulge in a little ice cream or coffee treat, too!
